Nellie Tayloe Ross Letter to Karl Stefan with Steel Cents

Nellie Tayloe Ross became the first governor in US history when she was elected to office to complete the term of her husband, the late Governor William Ross of Wyoming. She later became the first Director of the US Mint by serving an astounding twenty years in that capacity, from 1933 until 1953. She presided over the US Mint during the metallic composition change in the cent and nickel denominations during World War II and in this letter dated March 10, 1943 she has enclosed two examples of the new steel cents “from among the first to come off the presses” for Representative Karl Stefan. Stefan was a Republican Congressman from Nebraska who at the time was also on the Appropriations Committee. Though the enclosed steels cents (there are two steel cents included with the letter) appear unremarkable, they certainly have a remarkable provenance.
