Treasury of the United States $10,000 Second of Transfer 1858

Uniface document with “SECOND OF TRANSFER” imprinted in orange-red across center. At the upper right is the U.S. Capitol and at the left ornate panel a portrait of Washington in the center. The left ornate panel is darkened with likely glue residue on the reverse. The base vignette is of a small eagle. The issued amount of $10,000.00 is handwritten and made to the “Ass’t. Treasurer of the U.S. at San Francisco” and dated 2 November 1858. It is signed by the Secretary of the Treasury Howell Cobb of Georgia, as well as the Register of the Treasury Finley Bigger of Indiana. Cobb was an ardent advocate of the secession of Georgia from the Union whose portrait vignette appears on the Manufacturers Bank of Macon, Georgia $20.00 notes. This is both a Confederate-related signature piece as well as an interesting Western issuance. The reverse has additional handwriting and signatures. The reverse appears to be endorsed to De Witt Kittle and signed by JR Snyder, Assistant Treasurer San Francisco.

Priced at: $1,200.00
