1861 Assay Commission Medal J-AC-2 AE. NGC MS-64 BN.

1861 Assay Commission Medal J-AC-2 AE. NGC MS-64 BN.

First struck in 1860 and lastly in 1977, these medals were intended to be awarded to members of the annual Assay Commission. Unfortunately, or fortunately depending on your position as a collector, during the 1860s mint Director Snowden was having his employees restrike virtually anything he thought he could sell or trade to collectors. And these too suffered from this fate.

A little known fact is that the director’s income was directly related to the profitability of the Mint, and the Mint made more money striking medals than the seignorage on it’s coinage. Designed by James Longacre, of Indian cent and $20 Liberty fame, the design is very reminiscent of the pattern half dollars of the period.

1893 IL HK-155 SC$1 World’s Columbian Expo Medal NGC MS61

1893 IL HK-155 SC$1 World’s Columbian Expo Medal NGC MS61

A nice example of the “official” medal struck at the U.S. Mint’s exhibit on the fair grounds, by mint employees. Not the usually seen circulated piece associated with this medal. The obverse depicts the majestic U.S. Goverment building, while the reverse displays typical lettering of the period.

1933 CO HK-825 SC$1 PEDLEY-RYAN DOLLAR NGC MS63

1933 CO HK-825 SC$1 PEDLEY-RYAN DOLLAR NGC MS63

A fairly common issue, with 500 minted, in uncommon condition. Not an attractive design as these were made for utility, not commemoration.
