1851 was the first year of issue for the three cent piece and this is a great piece for the “first year of type” collector. Gorgeous silvery-blue patina touches both sides and illuminates this unusual and simple design.

1851 Three Cent Silver PCGS MS66 (CAC)

1851 Three Cent Silver PCGS MS66 (CAC)

With the postal rate decrease, the Three Cent Silver Coin was produced. Alas, Production of Gold coins increased, silver coins decreased and postal rates went to 3c. A 3c coin was produced using less silver and readily available for the U.S. Post office. A win – win. 1851 was the first year of issue and here is a great example. A silvery-blue patina is splashed with a wonderful golden tone near the peripheries.

1854 Three Cent Silver PCGS MS64 (CAC)

1854 Three Cent Silver PCGS MS64 (CAC)

Although popular initially when the Three Cent Coins went into circulation, the public quickly changed their minds. Because of the small size coins were easy to lose and as we know, silver quickly becomes discolored and dirty. The coins name evolved – Three Cent Silver to Trime then lastly and not lovingly the “Fish Scale.” This example boasts brightly untoned surfaces with a bit of die-clashing that is very common on the Three Cent Silver.

1858 Three Cent Silver PCGS MS65 (CAC)

1858 Three Cent Silver PCGS MS65 (CAC)

Stunning flecks of crimson, olive, aqua-marine and gold illuminate the surfaces of this bright coin. Although the mintage is high for the date, the availability in high grades is slim. A great short lived series with such a unique design and fun history attached to it.

1859 Three Cent Silver PCGS PR65 (CAC)

1859 Three Cent Silver PCGS PR65 (CAC)

First year of the Type Three design. Only 800 proofs were struck this year, but many were melted as unsold at year’s end, leaving far fewer available to collectors today. A great example with olive green, gold and crimson rims shimmering through the reflective fields.

1861 Three Cent Silver PCGS PR66

1861 Three Cent Silver PCGS PR66

A desirable and colorful representative of this Civil War date. 1,000 proofs were struck, but thought to have been melted when unsold. This is a tremendous little coin with plenty of punch. Vibrant violet, cobalt blue and petal rose toning only adds to the reflective fields.

1863 Three Cent Silver PCGS PR65 Cameo (CAC)

1863 Three Cent Silver PCGS PR65 Cameo (CAC)

The Trime was physically the lightest weight coins ever minted by the United States. Starting in 1854, the three cent silver had its silver metal content raised to 90% in order to encourage circulation, but with the United States deep in the Civil War, all silver was hoarded. This proof piece, not meant for circulation, was definitely well kept and cared for. Stunning mirrors are enhanced by light golden hues that deepen near the periphery. A lovely blue color touches the outermost part of the rims.
