1915-S $2.5 Panama Pacific PCGS MS 66 (CAC)

1915-S $2.5 Panama Pacific PCGS MS 66 (CAC)

The Pan-Pac quarter eagle is, in fact, scarce in all grades, in part due to its limited mintage. The San Francisco mint struck a total of 10,017 pieces of the Pan-Pac quarter eagle, but 3,251 were melted and unsold. This example boasts an attractive reddish cast and satiny surfaces that are remarkably preserved.

1916 McKinley G$1 NGC MS67 (CAC)

1916 McKinley G$1 NGC MS67 (CAC)

The design of the McKinley was due to the efforts of two of our coinage’s best known designers. The obverse of the McKinley Memorial dollar was the final issued design attributed to Chief Engraver Charles Barber, who died in 1917 after 38 years in that position and 48 years of work at the Mint. The Reverse was designed by G.T. Morgan. This example offers honey-gold surfaces with frosty luster and a bold strike.

The 1926 Sesquicentennial Exposition, held in Philadelphia to commemorate the 150th anniversary of American independence, was the occasion for the issuance of commemorative half dollars and quarter eagles. 1926 $2.5 Sesquicentennial PCGS MS 64

1926 $2.5 Sesquicentennial PCGS MS 64

The majority of the Sesquicentennial $2.5 sold went to the general public, where many were mishandled, cleaned, or made into jewelry. According to Mint records, 154,207 Sesqui quarter eagles (or more than three-quarters of the total mintage) went to the melting pot. This undeniably beautiful example presents surfaces that are exquisitely toned in lovely honey orange.

1926 $2.5 Sesquicentennial PCGS MS 65 (CAC)

1926 $2.5 Sesquicentennial PCGS MS 65 (CAC)

Booming luster complements the pleasing orange-gold coloration. An elusive issue at the next grade level. The Sesquicentennial quarter eagle of 1926, with its net mintage of 46,019 pieces, seemed like success compared to the totals achieved for other gold issues. Still, that number fell far short of the authorized mintage of 200,000 pieces, all of which were actually struck and most of which were later melted, resulting in considerable expense for the government.
