1795 Liberty Cap Half Cent Lettered Edge PCGS VF25 (CAC)

1795 Liberty Cap Half Cent Lettered Edge PCGS VF25 (CAC)

The amount of detail on this 1795 Half Cent is phenomenal for a VF designation. A splendid medium brown overall color is visible with deeper tones that line the portrait making the detail stand out. This design by Robert Scot ran from 1794 to 1797, with Liberty facing right, and is the lowest face value of a coin struck by the United States. A very handsome 216 year old coin.

Lovely warm tones of midnight blue, violet, emerald green, crimson and golden-yellow, illuminate the surfaces on both sides of this wonderful coin. There is nothing subdued, this example is bright and sharply definedDesigned by Christian Gobrecht, the Braided Hair design was already in use for cents since 1839, but introduced to as “Proof Only” for the Half Cents from 1840- 1848 and all of these proofs were restruck in the the late 1850’s. There are two different series of restrikes known as First Restrike and Second Restrikes. Each of these were coined from common reverse dies.

1853 Braided Hair Half Cent PCGS MS64BN (CAC)

1853 Braided Hair Half Cent PCGS MS64BN (CAC)

This coin is graced with superb, silky chocolate surfaces that are essentially undisturbed and completely intact. Early US copper is difficult to find with such qualities and especially so when one is searching the often under-appreciated half-cent series. The 1853 issue might be considered a “generic” date among half-cents, but with an original mintage of little more than one-quarter that of the 1909-S VDB Lincoln cent, these coins are anything but generic.

1857 Braided Hair Half Cent PCGS MS64RB (CAC)

1857 Braided Hair Half Cent PCGS MS64RB (CAC)

The 1857 was not only the last year of issue for the Braided Hair Design that graced Half Cents and Large cents, it was also the last year that the Half Cent denomination was produced. This example has lovely “red-brown” coloring that seems to lean more to the red side. The strike is very high end for a MS64, with all details nicely struck up, and with the super luster that enlivens the surfaces, this coin is sure to stand out in your collection.
