Abundant mint luster, preserved by a thin layer of protective patina (though virtually opaque). Well struck, showing all the detail as it should.
Struck in San Francisco in the beginning of the Reconstruction era following the Civil War, it is a wonder that this piece survived in such high grade. While almost all coinage with intrinsic value was hoarded on the east coast, those that were produced on the west coast saw extensive use. Hard money, that is gold and silver, was the choice of the “Wild West”. Paper money, on the other hand, was readily accepted and used by easterners.
