This is an absolutely breathtaking proof – type coin that represents the first year of issue for the five-cent nickel piece. Stunning reflective fields glow beneath frosty devices. From a small mintage of 200.

1867 Shield Nickel No Rays PCGS PR64 (CAC)

1867 Shield Nickel No Rays PCGS PR64 (CAC)

A stunning representative with pale-pink, sky-blue and mint-green that illuminates the surfaces. The five cent denomination was introduced to replace the five-cent fractional currency notes that were in circulation. The Shield nickel design was taken from Longacre’s two cent design and modified.

1870 Shield Nickel NGC PF65CAM

1870 Shield Nickel NGC PF65CAM

A bright, untoned coin that shows intense cameo contrast. In our opinion, GEM quality proof nickel coinage from the 19th century is very attractive at today’s levels. This allows virtually all collectors to start or add to a set before the inevitable price increase.

1871 Shield Nickel PCGS PR65 (CAC)

1871 Shield Nickel PCGS PR65 (CAC)

Even though, as with all proof coins of this date, there is some die polish visible, this is really a bright coin. The 1871 is a very desirable better-date to the series, and not a single coin has graded higher at PCGS.

1874 Shield Nickel NGC PF66 (CAC) Eliasberg

1874 Shield Nickel NGC PF66 (CAC) Eliasberg

Not only is this a tough date, but what a cool pedigree. Louis Eliasberg was an American Financier and Numismatist. His claim to fame in the Numismatic Community was completing a coin collection containing a specimen of every United States coin of every date, metal, denomination, and mint mark ever struck which were known as of that date. (Although the collection did not differentiate between proofs and circulation strikes) This wonderful example is untoned and dripping with luster. A stunning coin!
