1850 Liberty Quarter Eagle NGC MS61 (CAC)

1850 Liberty Quarter Eagle NGC MS61 (CAC)

A handsome example of this earlier date. Minor surface abrasions account for the grade, but there are no large bag marks usually associated with the MS 61 rating. Beautiful golden and coppery toning adorn both the obverse and reverse. Which leads me to this thought; this piece was probably struck with gold mined in the newly discovered fields of California. Remember, the San Francisco mint didn’t start production until 1854. A lot of coin for the money; and what a tale it could tell if it could speak.

1850 Quarter Eagle $2.5 NGC MS 61 (CAC)

1850 Quarter Eagle $2.5 NGC MS 61 (CAC)

During the early 1850s, the influx of newly mined California gold ensured higher gold production at all the mints. The 1850 Quarter Eagle has one of the higher mintages of the series with 252,923. And although this seems large, availability in mint state grades are small. This is one of 41 graded by NGC with only 54 higher. A nice coin with that crusty originality.

1851 Quarter Eagle PCGS MS63 (CAC)

1851 Quarter Eagle PCGS MS63 (CAC)

With a respectable original mintage of 1.3 million pieces, the 1851 is one of the more easily obtainable Quarter Eagles for the collector. A splendid example, both sides are satiny orange-gold in appearance which deepens near the rims.

Very well struck for the date. Both sides are very frosty and attractive. Bright and original with lovely reddish-orange color. This date becomes scarce in this grade and it is rare in Uncirculated.

1853 Liberty Quarter Eagle PCGS MS63 (CAC)

1853 Liberty Quarter Eagle PCGS MS63 (CAC)

Despite a large mintage of 1.4 million pieces this is a very elusive issue even at the MS63 level.
This boldly impressed yellow-orange piece offers strong luster and carefully preserved surfaces. On the reverse there are several scratches on the holder, if you have problems viewing the coin, please give us a call for a better description.

1861 $2.50 Type 2 Reverse. NGC MS 64

1861 $2.50 Type 2 Reverse. NGC MS 64

Issued during the first year of conflict in the “Civil War” and sporting the newly revised reverse.

Towards the end of 1861 the mint had basically suspended paying out any coins of intrinsic value, as the federal government needed all “hard” currency for the war effort. Public hoarding of the available specimens occurred, which accounts for the somewhat high survival rate for this issue. A near GEM example of United States coinage during those most difficult of times.

1873 Liberty Quarter Eagle Closed 3 PCGS MS64 (CAC)

1873 Liberty Quarter Eagle Closed 3 PCGS MS64 (CAC)

The scarcer of the two logo type varieties, as according to Breen the Closed 3 issue was produced only through February, 1873. The mint changed to the Open 3 design, believing the closed design looked too much like an “8”. Only 55,800 Closed 3 Quarter Eagles were minted. This example is 1 of 41 in to receive this grade with 9 higher. A wonderful representative with glowing golden surfaces.
