1863 Two Cent Pattern J-312 PCGS PR65RB (CAC)

This is the pattern for the Two Cent Piece that was adopted the following year. The coin is very similar but the Motto reads “God Our Trust” and shows the word “cents” on the reverse wrapping around the number “2”. This example boasts tremendous reflectivity in the fields with bright red – brown coloring. Only 14 examples have received this high of a grade from PCGS, and none higher.

The first official year of issue of this short lived series and the first coin to bear the motto “In God We Trust”. This motto was influenced by Brown University; their motto was In DEO SPERAMUS or In God We Hope. This was proposed by Secretary Chase who attended Brown. A great coin with only one example finer. Lovely red coloring that enhances the superb strike.
