The Two Cent Piece is a short lived series, 9 years total, and the first coin to bear the motto “In God We Trust.” Designed by James Longacre, a heraldic shield and arrows is displayed on the obverse and a wreath of wheat on the reverse. 1866 was the third year of issue and although it is has a large mintage with over 3 million; it is a tough coin to find in gem and especially with the “red” designation.

1871 Two Cent Piece PCGS MS64BN (CAC)

1871 Two Cent Piece PCGS MS64BN (CAC)

A very attractive example of this short lived series and the first coin to display the motto “In God We Trust” on it. Mintages dropped steadily throughout the production life of the denomination, and the low mintage 1871 is very hard to find with full Red color, making this brown two cent a great choice and a great value.

1872 Two Cent Piece NGC PR65 BN

Mint State production in 1872 was the lowest for the Two Cent series with just 65,000 coins and only 950 Proof pieces minted. With the scarcity of nicely preserved business strike pieces available, proofs are sought after. This piece here shows blazing ruby and plum tones over sharply struck devices.

The 1872 is the final year of the two cent piece. It is the scarcest issue in the series, besides the Proof Only 1873. This challenging and elusive example has glossy chestnut brown, well-preserved surfaces. The detail is solid, and the eye appeal is excellent . A great opportunity to own this key business strike.

Gorgeous red surfaces give a wonderful background to the precisely struck devices. The Two Cent Piece has always been in high demand and finding those special pieces with great surfaces, is tough. A great series to collect; the two cent piece only ran for nine years. The 1872 has the smallest mintage for the series (excluding the 1873- closed 3 only produced proofs and the 1873 Open 3 Restrikes), totaling 65000 coins. PCGS has a small population of 9 coins deserving the 65 grade in Red Brown with none higher. This is a true Mint state coin with a bit of doubling on the obverse.
