1855 G$1 PCGS MS66+ (CAC)

December 17, 2012 Sales Archive, Sold - Gold Dollars

Gold Dollars in general were met with National acceptance and an alternative to the unredeemable private notes that inundated the country as the value of gold and silver fluctuated, but with the dimensions of the coinage from 1849 to 1854, the coins were easily lost and in came the Type II Gold Dollar. In August of 1854 a new, thinner but larger version of the coin immersed. Longacre redesigned the new sized coin and placed a feathered headdress on Liberty, one of the first along with the Three Dollar gold(although not Longacre’s intent) paying homage to the Native Americans. The issue was brief and the coin proved unsatisfactory from the beginning. Apparently Longacre had overestimated the coin presses that were in use, especially in the Southern Branch Mints, and inevitably most coins that were minted were weak on the central hair and some if not all the date blurry and illegible. Most of the coins wore down quickly and were taken out of circulation and sent to the Philadelphia mint for recoinage.

This Philadelphia Mint coin offered here is definitely one of the few quality survivors. If you look at the Headdress and central hair all is nicely defined. The date shows slight weakness, but is still very discernable. But take a look at the luster and coloring on this example, it is mind blowing. Gorgeous swirling luster illuminates the golden-orange color and creates a wonderful setting for this breathtaking design.
