Adams Express Company Bill of Lading from HR Linderman Washington, DC 1874

The obverse of this Adams Express Company, Great Eastern, Western and Southern Express Forwarders bill of lading is interesting in that it is marked in cursive pen “Hon. HR Linderman” for a parcel with a declared value of $60 on January 20, 1874. Henry Richard (HR) Linderman was Director of the US Mint from April, 1867 through May, 1869 and again from April, 1873 through December 1878. He helped author the Coinage Act of 1873, was an advocate of the gold standard and pushed for production of the Trade dollar. He also amassed quite a coin collection, which was claimed by the US government prior to auction in 1887. The reverse of the document lists the contents as “Seven Sets of Pattern trade dollar in Silver 1873. Also two Sets in copper…”

Just imagine what it was like to be the recipient of this box of patterns!
