Harlem & N.Y. Nav. Co. Civil War Stamp Envelope

Reed # PE311 ex-Proskey/Western Reserve Historical Society/Krause/Stacks-Bowers 7907. R-9, three known, this example is the only known one with a presumed conductor’s punch cancel hole in the lower right hand corner. These envelopes were used for fares and were one of the first usages of such envelopes. In general, these transportation issuers are quite important compared to other issuers. This envelope also notes that “Stamps and Envelopes at the Office”; it is unknown if this meant the Post Office or their office. Evidence of prior mounting on the reverse and creased in the center.
