Operation Bernhard Bank of England Fifty-Pound Counterfeit PCGS Apparent EF45

September 22, 2014 Sold - Americana

Operation Bernhard was a major counterfeiting program instituted by the German government and directed by SS Major Bernhard Kruger to produce counterfeit British currency during World War II. The notes that were eventually produced have been considered some of the most perfect counterfeits ever to be discovered and were meant to destabilize the British economy during the war by causing inflation after release. The counterfeits were produced with denominations of five, ten, twenty and fifty Pounds and most are believed to be have been disposed of at the bottom of Lake Toplitz at the end of the war. This example is from a fifty Pound note with a PCGS grade of Apparent EF45 with noted edge damage at right and serial number 46742.
