Treaty of Gold and Silver Coins (Traité des Monnaies d’Or et d’Argent) Book 1806 in French

October 13, 2014 Sales Archive, Sold - Americana

The original Red Book! Perhaps not, but it’s cool to think of it that way. This is a copy of the massive 1806 work written in French by Pierre-Frederic Bonneville, Essayeur de Commerce (Assayer of Commerce). The book is approximately 10.5 x 15 inches, has a leather or faux-leather spine with gold leaf lettering and is greater than 250-numbered pages. It covers, as type pieces, the coinage issues then in use throughout the world.

The section on the United States (États Unis) has a half-page devoted to descriptions of our type coinage and legislation followed by a full-page table listing denomination, weight, fineness, etc…This is followed by two pages of illustrations to scale for both gold and silver coinage. The illustrations are exceptionally well done and detailed, even if Ms. Liberty does look a bit tired in some of them, and include edge inscriptions used on the coins. Similar detailed tables and quality illustrations can be found for the coinage of other countries, too.
